During down economic times, funding for transportation becomes strained. And in Mason District and the rest of Northern Virginia, that strain results in even greater gridlock upon our roads. As you likely know, all funding, maintenance and construction of roads is the responsibility of the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT). However, the County is able to affect the priorities in the expenditure of resources in our area.
As your Supervisor, Penny alerts VDOT to the most critical areas that require attention. This goes beyond potholes that need filling, although that is a constant battle. It involves Penny being aware of areas where congestion is most acute, or where safety for drivers and pedestrians requires action. Sometimes it involves calming traffic conditions by using speed humps to lower the threat of speeding vehicles through residential neighborhoods. And sometimes it involves alternative transportation sources, like bike paths.
But whatever the circumstances require, Penny works constantly to make sure that Mason District’s needs are heard in Richmond and in Washington, if necessary. She works tirelessly to battle the both the bureaucratic and budgetary challenges to improving transportation.
