Diversity

diversityThrough the exemplary program, Kaleidoscope, and a desire to include the abundant contributions of all residents of Mason District, Penny has forged and promoted a cooperative community that recognizes the full benefits of inclusion for all people.

Diversity in Mason District is one of our strengths.  People from different places and cultures combine their strengths and perspectives, and add to the tapestry of life.  The result is a richly diverse community that brings life, color, and texture to the arts, education, and cuisine.  Penny has been honored frequently for her promotion of diversity, access, and understanding for all people in Mason District.

The goal in recognizing our diverse community and its cultures is to promote understanding and cooperation between and among various groups.  By learning about other peoples’ heritage, we enrich ourselves and our community, gaining much more in knowledge and understanding.  Whether through the Vietnamese “Gateway to Freedom” project at the Thomas Jefferson Library, the Peace Pole at Bailey’s Park, the broad variety of Korean restaurants in Annandale, or colorful Latino celebrations of music and dance, we open ourselves to new thoughts, foods, music, and ways of life in our now-global community.

Penny Gross has taken the time to understand the unique needs of various residents, to promote greater appreciation of multiple cultures, and to find ways of tailoring local government services to meet the needs of longtime residents and recent arrivals.
